American Tax Relief Sued by FTC
American Tax Relief has been sued by the FTC for allegedly engaging in deceptive practices. Their website has been taken down and the following is posted on their homepage, and their phones are not being answered:
The Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) has filed a lawsuit against American Tax Relief LLC alleging that it has engaged in deceptive practices relating to the advertising, marketing, promotion, offering for sale, or sale of tax relief services. The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting the alleged practices. You may obtain additional information directly from the FTC at www.ftc.gov.
It seems the State of Illinois has also issued a temporary restraining order. Hmmm, you think? With a little bit of research on complaint boards and different websites, you could see this coming a mile away. If only the FTC and State Attorney Generals would evaluate all of the bad apples, it might just provide a much needed house cleaning of our industry. In the end, the quality firms will prevail, but in the meantime it breaks our hearts to see so many people taken advantage of to this extent.
If you are looking for tax help or a good tax firm, please do your due diligence.
